This course will provide an analysis and examination of Western music from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, investigating how music affects society and how society shapes musical ideas. Musical ideas will be presented in their proper context and serve as a basis for understanding wider trends in Western Civilization. The inter-relationships between classical music and society will be surveyed. In addition, the correlation between music and the other fine arts will be identified. The course will also consider the role of technology in shaping classical music and how technology affects how music is apprehended.
